Frequently Asked Q
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an English Springer Spaniel the right dog for me?
The English Springer Spaniel is a dog characterized by long, drooping ears, a
medium to long coat, and a happily wagging, docked tail. Females are around 19"
tall at the withers, weighing around 40 lbs, and males around 20", weighing
about 50 lbs. They may be black and white, liver and white, or either
combination with tan points (tri-colored), with or without ticking (freckles).
The Springer's happy, energetic personality and an eagerness to please, has made
the versatile English Springer Spaniel a favorite for many activities. The most
important role for a Springer, or any dog however, is as a gentle, loving
companion. However, the English Springer Spaniel is not a breed for everyone!
Springers can be high energy dogs and require a moderate amount of daily
exercise. They also need structure and consistency, or may try to dominate the
household. The English Springer Spaniel, when raised and trained properly, is an
excellent companion, a willing obedience partner, and a joy to own and love.
Why rescue?
Dogs end up in shelters, humane societies, and county pounds for various
reasons. They are picked up off of the street as strays or relinquished by their
owners because of a move, illness or death, financial crisis, or other troubled
circumstances. There are many good reasons to consider adopting a rescue
Springer (or any rescue dog). The dog is often older, past the puppy stage of
chewing and usually has been house trained. Many Springers we receive into the
rescue program are obedience trained, crate trained and will walk on a lead
nicely. When a Springer is adopted from our rescue program, the Springer has
been thoroughly evaluated. He or she has been examined by a vet, given any
necessary shots, checked for heartworms, and neutered/spayed. During all this
handling and examination, the Springer's temperament is tested. A Springer
exhibiting aggressive behavior will not be placed into the rescue program.
How does your adoption process work? How do I start?
The adoption process is started when you fill out an adoption application. When
describing the type of dog that you would prefer, try to think in terms of
temperament rather than color, sex or age.
I'm Approved!
The adoption coordinator for your area will inform you when you have been
approved for adoption. You will work with this person in finding the right match
for you.
Available Dogs
We will contact you when there is a dog that is available that we feel would be
a good fit for you. Likewise, if you see a dog listed that you would like more
information about, please let your adoption coordinator know.
I found a Springer!
When you find a potential match, we will set up a meeting for you to meet the
dog. If the dog is located a distance from you, we will arrange for you to talk
with the foster family or the surrendering family, and provide pictures of the
dog, if available. If all concerned feel that the dog and family are a good
match, the adoption is arranged. We will arrange a meeting for the adoption to
take place. If you live a distance from the dog, we will help you to arrange
transportation for the dog to you. We ask that the adopting family commit to
driving a portion of the trip.
Donations
Rescue groups are funded by generous donations. All of the folks involved are
volunteers who donate their time, money and hearts to this effort. To help us
provide medical care for all of our rescued Springers, we ask that the adopting
family give a tax-deductible donation in the following amount:
Under 2 years...................$250
2+ years to 10 years........$200
10+ years......................... .$150
Seniors for Seniors! We will waive the adoption fee if a Senior (65 and up)
adopts a Senior (10 and up)
My New Springer
New England English Springer Spaniel Rescue is available for help before,
during, and after the adoption. Please do not hesitate to call us. We will
follow up after the adoption to make sure that everything is going well. We want
to make sure that the adoption is working out for you and for your new Springer.
If for some reason the adoption doesn't work out or you are unable to keep your
Springer, New England English Springer Spaniel expects the dog to be returned to
rescue. And remember, we always love to hear about how your adopted Springer is
doing, and pictures are always welcome!
